The Roofing Calculator converts the horizontal roof footprint into an estimated sloped roof area using the entered roof pitch. It then applies the selected waste allowance and calculates the number of roofing packages required.

Measurements and Information You Need
Collect the following information before using the calculator:

Use horizontal footprint measurements rather than measurements taken along the sloped roof surface. The calculator uses the pitch to convert the horizontal footprint into sloped roof area.

How to Use the Roofing Calculator
Step 1: Select the Unit System
Choose the measurement system used for the project:
- Imperial / US
- Metric
Imperial measurements can be entered using supported units such as feet, inches, or yards. Metric mode displays suitable metric measurements and area results.
Check the unit beside each field before calculating. A value entered in the wrong unit can produce a large error in the roof area and material quantities.
Step 2: Enter the Footprint Length
Enter the horizontal length of the roof section in the Footprint length field. This is the plan-view measurement from one end of the rectangular roof footprint to the other.
Do not measure along the roof slope for this field. The pitch multiplier will account for the slope later in the calculation.
Include the roof overhang when it will be covered by the roofing material. Building wall dimensions alone may exclude the eaves and other overhanging roof areas.
Step 3: Enter the Footprint Width
Enter the complete horizontal width of the roof footprint in the Footprint width field.
For a simple gable roof, use the full horizontal width from one eave edge to the opposite eave edge. Do not enter only half the building width unless the section being calculated represents only one matching roof plane and the other plane will be handled separately.
The calculator multiplies footprint length by footprint width. This means the entered footprint should represent the complete rectangular horizontal area associated with the selected roof section.
Step 4: Enter the Number of Roof Sections
Use the Number of roof sections field when the project contains two or more rectangular sections with exactly the same footprint dimensions and pitch.
For example, enter:
- 1 for one rectangular roof footprint
- 2 for two identical roof sections
- 4 for four matching sections
Do not use this field to combine sections with different lengths, widths, or pitches. Calculate those sections separately and add their material quantities together.
Step 5: Enter the Roof Pitch
Enter the roof pitch as the vertical rise for every 12 units of horizontal run. For example:
- 4 represents a 4:12 pitch
- 6 represents a 6:12 pitch
- 8 represents an 8:12 pitch
- 12 represents a 12:12 pitch
A 6:12 roof rises 6 units for every 12 horizontal units. The same ratio applies whether the measurements are expressed in inches, centimeters, or another compatible unit.
The calculator converts the entered pitch into a pitch multiplier. A steeper roof has a larger multiplier and therefore a larger sloped surface area than a low-pitched roof with the same horizontal footprint.
Confirm the pitch from construction drawings, a reliable roof report, or a suitable measuring tool. Do not guess the pitch solely from a ground-level visual estimate when accurate material quantities are needed.
Step 6: Enter the Waste Allowance
Enter the additional percentage you want included in the Waste allowance field. The calculator uses 10% as its initial value, but the suitable allowance depends on the roof.
Waste can cover:
- Shingle cuts at roof edges
- Valleys and hips
- Dormers and roof intersections
- Damaged roofing materials
- Starter-course adjustments
- Pattern alignment
- Minor measurement differences
A simple rectangular gable roof may produce less cutting waste than a roof containing several valleys, hips, dormers, or irregular planes. Confirm the appropriate allowance with the roofing manufacturer, supplier, or contractor.
Enter 0% if you want to view the calculated roof area before additional material is added. Do not increase the roof dimensions manually if you are already applying waste through this field.
Step 7: Enter the Coverage per Shingle Bundle
Enter the net area covered by one shingle bundle in the Coverage per shingle bundle field.
The calculator begins with a value of 33.33 square feet in Imperial / US mode. This should not be treated as universal coverage. Bundle coverage can vary by manufacturer, product line, shingle design, exposure, and packaging.
Use the net coverage printed on the bundle, product data sheet, or manufacturer’s installation information. Do not calculate coverage from the physical size of the packaged shingles because the installed courses overlap.
The calculator divides the waste-adjusted roofing area by the entered bundle coverage and rounds the result up to a whole bundle.
Step 8: Enter the Coverage per Underlayment Roll
Enter the net installed coverage provided by one underlayment roll in the Coverage per underlayment roll field.
The calculator begins with a value of 400 square feet in Imperial / US mode. Actual roll coverage can vary by product width, roll length, overlap requirements, roof pitch, installation method, and manufacturer instructions.
Use net coverage after required overlaps rather than the complete unrolled sheet area. The area printed as gross roll size may be greater than its effective installed coverage.
The calculator rounds the estimated underlayment quantity up to a whole roll.
Step 9: Enter the Price per Bundle
Enter an optional price in the Price per bundle field to estimate the shingle bundle cost.
The price must represent one complete bundle and should use the currency relevant to your location. The calculator does not convert between USD, CAD, GBP, AUD, NZD, or other currencies.
The estimated bundle cost may not include:
- Underlayment cost
- Starter shingles
- Ridge-cap shingles
- Hip-cap materials
- Ice and water membrane
- Flashing and drip edge
- Fasteners and sealants
- Roof ventilation
- Delivery and unloading
- Old-roof removal and disposal
- Labor, permits, equipment, and taxes
Leave this field empty if you only need the material quantities.
Step 10: Calculate the Roofing Materials
Review the dimensions, units, number of sections, pitch, waste percentage, package coverage, and optional bundle price. Select the calculation button when every entry is correct.
The calculator may request a correction when:
- A required dimension is missing
- A length or width is zero or negative
- The section quantity is invalid
- The roof pitch is outside the supported range
- The waste percentage is invalid
- The shingle bundle coverage is missing or invalid
- The underlayment roll coverage is missing or invalid
- The optional bundle price is negative or invalid

How to Read the Roofing Calculator Results
Horizontal Footprint
The Horizontal footprint is the plan-view area before the roof pitch is applied.
Horizontal footprint = Length × Width × Number of identical sections
This result is not the finished sloped roof area unless the roof is completely flat.
Roof Pitch
The Roof pitch result confirms the rise-per-12 value used in the calculation. Review it carefully because an incorrect pitch can affect every material result.
Pitch Multiplier
The Pitch multiplier converts horizontal footprint area into sloped roof area.
The calculator uses:
Pitch multiplier = √(1 + (Rise ÷ 12)²)
For a 6:12 pitch:
√(1 + (6 ÷ 12)²) = approximately 1.118
This means the sloped surface area is approximately 1.118 times the horizontal footprint area.
Roof Area
The Roof area is the estimated sloped surface before the waste allowance is added.
Roof area = Horizontal footprint × Pitch multiplier
This is a geometric estimate. It may not include every extra surface or detail found on a complex roof.
Waste Allowance
The Waste allowance result shows the selected extra percentage. The additional area is calculated from the estimated roof area.
Additional waste area = Roof area × Waste percentage ÷ 100
Area with Waste
The Area with waste is the estimated roofing coverage after adding the selected waste percentage.
Area with waste = Roof area × (1 + Waste percentage ÷ 100)
This is the main area used to estimate shingle bundles and package quantities.
Roofing Squares
A roofing square is an area measurement commonly used for roofing materials:
1 roofing square = 100 ft²
The calculator uses:
Roofing squares = Area with waste ÷ 100 ft²
One roofing square is approximately 9.2903 square meters. A roofing square is a measure of area, not the number of shingle bundles. The bundles needed for one square depend on the actual coverage of the selected product.
Estimated Shingle Bundles
The Estimated shingle order shows the number of complete shingle bundles required to cover the waste-adjusted area.
Shingle bundles = Area with waste ÷ Coverage per bundle
The result is rounded up to the next whole bundle. For example, a result of 44.2 bundles becomes an estimated order of 45 bundles.
Underlayment Rolls
The Underlayment rolls result estimates the number of complete rolls required using the entered net roll coverage.
Underlayment rolls = Area with waste ÷ Net coverage per roll
The result is rounded up to a whole roll. Confirm required overlaps, double coverage, eave membranes, and product-specific installation rules before purchasing.
Estimated Bundle Cost
The estimated cost is calculated when a valid price per bundle is entered:
Estimated bundle cost = Estimated shingle bundles × Price per bundle
This is an estimate for shingle bundles only. It is not a complete roof replacement or installation quotation.
Roofing Calculator Formula
The complete calculation follows these steps:
Horizontal footprint = Length × Width × Number of sections
Pitch multiplier = √(1 + (Rise ÷ 12)²)
Roof area = Horizontal footprint × Pitch multiplier
Area with waste = Roof area × (1 + Waste percentage ÷ 100)
Roofing squares = Area with waste ÷ 100 ft²
Shingle bundles = Area with waste ÷ Net bundle coverage
Underlayment rolls = Area with waste ÷ Net roll coverage
Bundle cost = Rounded bundle quantity × Price per bundle
Measurements must be converted into compatible units before multiplication or division. Package quantities are rounded up because complete bundles and rolls are normally purchased.
Imperial / US Roofing Calculation Example
Suppose a rectangular roof footprint measures 40 feet long and 30 feet wide. The roof has a 6:12 pitch, a 10% waste allowance, shingle coverage of 33.33 square feet per bundle, and underlayment coverage of 400 square feet per roll.
- Footprint length: 40 ft
- Footprint width: 30 ft
- Number of sections: 1
- Roof pitch: 6:12
- Waste allowance: 10%
- Bundle coverage: 33.33 ft²
- Roll coverage: 400 ft²
Calculate the horizontal footprint:
40 × 30 = 1,200 ft²
Calculate the pitch multiplier:
√(1 + (6 ÷ 12)²) = approximately 1.118
Calculate the sloped roof area:
1,200 × 1.118 = approximately 1,341.64 ft²
Add 10% waste:
1,341.64 × 1.10 = approximately 1,475.80 ft²
Convert the area into roofing squares:
1,475.80 ÷ 100 = approximately 14.76 squares
Calculate shingle bundles:
1,475.80 ÷ 33.33 = approximately 44.28 bundles
Round up to an estimated order of 45 shingle bundles.
Calculate underlayment rolls:
1,475.80 ÷ 400 = approximately 3.69 rolls
Round up to an estimated quantity of 4 underlayment rolls.
Metric Roofing Calculation Example
Suppose a rectangular roof footprint measures 12 meters long and 9 meters wide. The roof has a 6:12 pitch and a 10% waste allowance. The selected shingles provide 3.10 square meters of net coverage per bundle, while each underlayment roll provides 37 square meters of net coverage.
- Footprint length: 12 m
- Footprint width: 9 m
- Number of sections: 1
- Roof pitch: 6:12
- Waste allowance: 10%
- Bundle coverage: 3.10 m²
- Roll coverage: 37 m²
Calculate the horizontal footprint:
12 × 9 = 108 m²
Apply the 6:12 pitch multiplier:
108 × 1.118 = approximately 120.75 m²
Add 10% waste:
120.75 × 1.10 = approximately 132.83 m²
Convert the area into roofing squares:
132.83 ÷ 9.2903 = approximately 14.30 squares
Calculate shingle bundles:
132.83 ÷ 3.10 = approximately 42.85 bundles
Round up to an estimated order of 43 shingle bundles.
Calculate underlayment rolls:
132.83 ÷ 37 = approximately 3.59 rolls
Round up to an estimated quantity of 4 underlayment rolls.
The coverage values in this example are assumptions only. Use the net coverage stated for the actual products being purchased.
How to Calculate a Complex Roof
The calculator uses rectangular horizontal footprints. For a roof containing different dimensions or pitches:
- Divide the roof into simple rectangular sections.
- Measure the horizontal length and width of each section.
- Identify the pitch of each section.
- Calculate every different section separately.
- Add the shingle bundle quantities together.
- Add the underlayment quantities together.
- Adjust the final order to the supplier’s package quantities.
Do not use the identical-section field for roof planes with different measurements or pitches.
Complex roofs may also require extra material for valleys, hips, ridges, dormers, sidewall intersections, flashing, starter courses, and cap shingles. A professional roof measurement report or contractor takeoff may be more suitable for these projects.
Horizontal Footprint vs. Sloped Roof Area
The horizontal footprint is the area visible in a straight-down plan view. Sloped roof area is the actual surface covered by roofing materials.
These areas are not the same on a pitched roof. As the pitch becomes steeper, the sloped surface becomes larger while the horizontal footprint remains unchanged.
Do not enter a measured sloped length and then apply the pitch multiplier again. Doing so can count the slope twice and overestimate the required materials.

If you change a dimension, pitch, waste percentage, coverage value, or price after calculating, calculate again before saving or printing. This ensures that the report contains the latest results.
Common Roofing Calculator Mistakes
- Entering wall dimensions without roof overhangs: Include eaves and other covered extensions when they form part of the roof area.
- Measuring along the slope: Enter horizontal footprint measurements because the calculator applies the pitch multiplier.
- Applying pitch twice: Do not enter sloped dimensions and then add a pitch adjustment.
- Using the wrong pitch: A 6:12 pitch is not the same as 6 degrees.
- Combining different roof sections: Calculate areas with different dimensions or pitches separately.
- Ignoring valleys and dormers: Complex details can increase cuts and waste.
