How to Use the Concrete Calculator
This concrete calculator estimates the material required for a rectangular slab, floor, footing, pad or similar concrete section. It supports Imperial/US and metric measurements and can calculate multiple identical sections at once.

Imperial length and width measurements can be entered in feet, inches or yards. Thickness can be entered in inches or feet. Metric measurements support metres, centimetres and millimetres.

What the Results Mean
The main result is the suggested concrete order quantity after adding the selected waste allowance. Imperial results use cubic yards as the primary unit, while metric results use cubic metres.

The approximate weight uses a normal-weight concrete density of 2,320 kilograms per cubic metre. Actual concrete density can vary according to the mix, aggregate and moisture content.
Concrete Volume Formula
The basic formula for a rectangular concrete section is:
Concrete volume = length × width × thickness × number of identical sections
The dimensions must first be expressed in compatible units. The selected waste allowance is then added:
Order quantity = calculated volume × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100)
Imperial Formula
When length and width are measured in feet and thickness is measured in inches, divide the thickness by 12 to convert it to feet:
Cubic feet = length in feet × width in feet × (thickness in inches ÷ 12)
There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard:
Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27
Metric Formula
Convert all measurements to metres before multiplying. Divide centimetres by 100 or millimetres by 1,000 to convert them to metres:
Cubic metres = length in metres × width in metres × thickness in metres
How the Waste Allowance Works
The calculator allows a waste percentage from 0% to 50%. An allowance of 5–10% is often used for spillage, uneven excavation, form variation and minor measurement differences. The appropriate amount depends on the project and site conditions.
A simple, accurately formed section on a level base may require less allowance. Irregular excavations, unstable forms, uneven ground or several separate pours may require more. Waste is added to the concrete volume before the bag quantities and approximate weight are calculated.
Pre-Mixed Concrete Bag Estimates
For Imperial/US calculations, the tool estimates 40 lb, 60 lb and 80 lb bags using approximate yields of 0.30, 0.45 and 0.60 cubic feet per bag. Metric calculations include 20 kg, 25 kg, 30 kg and 40 kg bags using the example yields built into the calculator.
The result is always rounded up to the next whole bag because partial bags cannot normally be purchased. Bag yield is not universal. Mix composition and manufacturer instructions can change the amount produced by a bag, so check the yield printed on the packaging before purchasing.
Practical Concrete Estimation Example
Consider one rectangular slab measuring 10 feet long, 10 feet wide and 4 inches thick with a 10% waste allowance.
First, convert 4 inches to feet:
4 ÷ 12 = 0.3333 feet
Calculate the volume before waste:
10 × 10 × 0.3333 = 33.33 cubic feet
Convert cubic feet to cubic yards:
33.33 ÷ 27 = approximately 1.23 cubic yards
Add 10% waste:
1.23 × 1.10 = approximately 1.36 cubic yards
The suggested order quantity is therefore approximately 1.36 cubic yards. Based on the calculator’s example yields, this is about 123 of the 40 lb bags, 82 of the 60 lb bags or 62 of the 80 lb bags. Verify the selected product’s stated yield before ordering.
Important Estimation Considerations
Measure the finished internal dimensions of the forms or excavation rather than relying only on plan dimensions. Changes in excavation depth can significantly affect the required volume across a large area.
Ready-mix suppliers may apply minimum orders, delivery fees and their own rounding increments. Discuss the calculated quantity with the supplier before scheduling delivery.
This calculator is designed for rectangular sections. It does not separately calculate circular columns, tubes, stairs or irregular shapes. Divide a complex project into suitable rectangular sections only when that method reasonably represents its geometry.
