It calculates the paved area, compacted volume and material weight from the entered length, width, finished thickness and asphalt density.
The calculator supports Imperial/US and metric measurements. It also includes an adjustable waste allowance and truck capacity. Results show asphalt weight before waste, the suggested order quantity and the estimated number of truckloads.

Asphalt Calculation Formula
The calculator first determines the paved area and compacted asphalt volume:
Surface area = length × width
Compacted volume = surface area × compacted thickness
The compacted volume is multiplied by the selected asphalt density:
Asphalt weight = compacted volume × compacted density
The waste-adjusted order quantity is calculated as follows:
Order quantity = asphalt weight × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100)
Estimated truckloads are calculated from the waste-adjusted weight:
Truckloads = order quantity ÷ truck capacity
Calculating Asphalt in US Tons
When length and width are measured in feet and compacted thickness is entered in inches, divide the thickness by 12 to convert it to feet. Multiply the resulting cubic feet by the asphalt density in pounds per cubic foot.
US tons = cubic feet × density in lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000
Calculating Asphalt in Metric Tons
Metric dimensions are converted to meters before calculating volume. Millimeters are divided by 1,000 and centimeters are divided by 100.
Metric tons = cubic meters × density in kg/m³ ÷ 1,000
Asphalt Tonnage Example
Consider a rectangular paving area measuring 50 feet long, 10 feet wide and 3 inches thick after compaction. Use an asphalt density of 145 pounds per cubic foot.
Convert the compacted thickness to feet:
3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 feet
Calculate the compacted volume:
50 × 10 × 0.25 = 125 cubic feet
Calculate the asphalt weight:
125 × 145 = 18,125 pounds
Convert pounds to US tons:
18,125 ÷ 2,000 = approximately 9.06 US tons
Add a 5% waste allowance:
9.06 × 1.05 = approximately 9.52 US tons
The suggested order quantity is approximately 9.52 US tons. With an entered truck capacity of 20 US tons, the calculated quantity equals approximately 0.48 truckloads. The supplier may still charge for or schedule one delivery.
Compacted Asphalt Density
The calculator’s default density is 145 pounds per cubic foot, which is within the typical range for compacted asphalt mixtures. However, asphalt density varies with aggregate type, binder content, mix design and achieved compaction.
Using the density supplied by the asphalt producer gives a more project-specific result. A small change in density can create a noticeable difference in tonnage across a large paved area.
Waste Allowance for Asphalt
The waste allowance adds material for measurement differences, irregular edges, minor thickness variation, handling losses and other jobsite conditions. The calculator uses 5% as its default, but the percentage can be adjusted from 0% to 50%.
The appropriate allowance depends on the paving layout, measurement accuracy, base preparation, placement method and supplier requirements. Waste should not be used to correct a major error in the measured area or specified thickness.
Compacted Thickness and Loose Asphalt
The calculator uses the finished compacted thickness entered in the form. Loose asphalt is thicker before rolling because compaction reduces air voids and brings the mixture to its finished density.
Do not enter an assumed loose-lift thickness unless it represents the final compacted thickness required for the calculation. The paving contractor or mix supplier should confirm lift thickness and compaction requirements.
Important Asphalt Estimate Limitations
This calculator is intended for rectangular paving areas with a consistent compacted thickness. Irregular areas should be divided into measurable sections and calculated separately. Areas with different thicknesses also require separate calculations.
The result estimates asphalt quantity only. It does not calculate excavation, aggregate base, tack coat, sealcoat, labor, equipment, delivery charges or total project cost.
Actual requirements may vary because of base conditions, mix density, compaction, drainage design, uneven thickness, material loss and supplier ordering rules. Confirm the final tonnage, mix specification, truck capacity and delivery arrangement with the asphalt supplier or paving contractor before ordering.
