Roof Area Formula

Roof area = horizontal footprint area × √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²). The formula adjusts a simple horizontal footprint for roof slope.

Ordering Note

Shingle and underlayment package coverage varies by product. Use the net coverage printed by the manufacturer and round package quantities up.

Important: Measure overhangs and all roof sections. Complex roofs with hips, valleys, dormers or intersecting planes should be measured section by section.

Roofing Material Calculator

The Roofing Calculator estimates the roof area and asphalt shingle materials required for a simple rectangular roof footprint. It adjusts the horizontal footprint for the selected roof pitch before calculating roofing squares, shingle bundles and underlayment rolls.

The calculator supports Imperial/US and metric measurements. It also includes multiple identical roof sections, an adjustable waste allowance, custom package coverage and an optional cost estimate based on the entered price per shingle bundle.

Roofing Calculator Results

The main result is the estimated number of shingle bundles to order after the selected waste allowance has been included. Bundle and underlayment quantities are rounded up to whole packages.

The complete calculation results include:

  • Horizontal roof footprint
  • Selected roof pitch
  • Roof pitch multiplier
  • Pitch-adjusted roof area
  • Additional area included for waste
  • Total roofing area with waste
  • Roofing squares
  • Estimated shingle bundles
  • Estimated underlayment rolls
  • Optional shingle bundle cost
  • Roof area in square feet and square meters

The optional cost result covers shingle bundles only. Underlayment, ridge caps, starter shingles, flashing, fasteners, delivery, labor and other project expenses are not included.

Roof Area Calculation Formula

The calculator first determines the total horizontal footprint:

Horizontal footprint = length × width × number of identical sections

The roof pitch multiplier is calculated from the selected rise per 12 units of horizontal run:

Pitch multiplier = √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²)

The horizontal footprint is then adjusted for the roof slope:

Roof area = horizontal footprint × pitch multiplier

The selected waste allowance is added to determine the material order area:

Area with waste = roof area × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100)

Roofing Squares and Shingle Bundles

A roofing square is a standard roofing measurement equal to 100 square feet of roof area. The calculator converts the waste-adjusted area into roofing squares:

Roofing squares = area with waste ÷ 100

Shingle bundles are calculated using the package coverage entered in the calculator:

Shingle bundles = area with waste ÷ coverage per bundle

The result is rounded up to the next whole bundle. The default bundle coverage is 33.33 square feet, which is approximately three bundles per roofing square. Actual package coverage varies by shingle type and manufacturer, so use the coverage printed on the selected product.

Underlayment Roll Estimate

The Roofing Calculator estimates underlayment rolls by dividing the waste-adjusted roof area by the entered net coverage per roll:

Underlayment rolls = area with waste ÷ net coverage per roll

The result is rounded up to a whole roll. Underlayment dimensions and net installed coverage vary because of roll size, overlaps, roof pitch and installation instructions. Enter the manufacturer’s stated net coverage instead of relying only on the roll’s overall dimensions.

Roofing Calculation Example

Consider a rectangular building footprint measuring 40 feet long and 30 feet wide with a 6/12 roof pitch.

Calculate the horizontal footprint:

40 × 30 = 1,200 square feet

Calculate the pitch multiplier:

√(1 + (6 ÷ 12)²) = approximately 1.1180

Calculate the pitch-adjusted roof area:

1,200 × 1.1180 = approximately 1,341.64 square feet

Add a 10% waste allowance:

1,341.64 × 1.10 = approximately 1,475.80 square feet

Convert the waste-adjusted area to roofing squares:

1,475.80 ÷ 100 = approximately 14.76 roofing squares

Using coverage of 33.33 square feet per shingle bundle:

1,475.80 ÷ 33.33 = approximately 44.28 bundles

The estimated order is therefore 45 shingle bundles. With an underlayment coverage of 400 square feet per roll, the estimate is 4 rolls.

Roof Pitch and Surface Area

Roof pitch describes the vertical rise for every 12 units of horizontal run. For example, a 6/12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance.

A steeper roof has more surface area than its horizontal footprint. The pitch multiplier accounts for this difference. A 0/12 roof has a multiplier of 1, while increasing the pitch increases the calculated roof area.

The calculator uses pitch options from 0/12 through 24/12. The selected pitch must represent the roof sections included in the calculation. Sections with different pitches should be calculated separately.

Roofing Waste Allowance

A waste allowance helps cover shingle cuts, damaged material, starter courses and measurement differences. Roof shape, pitch, valleys, hips, dormers and the selected shingle pattern can affect the appropriate allowance.

The calculator uses a default waste allowance of 10%, which can be adjusted from 0% to 50%. A simple roof may produce less waste than a roof with several intersecting planes or complicated details.

The selected waste percentage is applied to both the shingle and underlayment estimates. Confirm the appropriate allowance with the roofing supplier or installer before ordering.

Important Roofing Estimate Limitations

This calculator is designed for simple rectangular roof footprints with one selected pitch. It assumes that the entered length and width represent the complete horizontal footprint, including any overhangs that require roofing material.

Complex roofs with hips, valleys, dormers, intersecting sections or different pitches should be divided into measurable sections. Each section may need to be calculated separately before the quantities are combined.

The result does not automatically estimate ridge-cap shingles, starter strips, valley material, flashing, drip edge, ice-and-water protection, roofing nails, vents or other accessories. It also does not determine structural capacity, roof condition, installation method or compliance with local building requirements.

Confirm roof measurements, product coverage, waste allowance and final package quantities with the roofing manufacturer, supplier or qualified roofing professional before purchasing materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Roofing Calculator estimate?

The calculator estimates pitch-adjusted roof area, waste-adjusted area, roofing squares, shingle bundles, underlayment rolls and optional shingle bundle cost.

How does roof pitch affect the calculated roof area?

How does roof pitch affect the calculated roof area?

What is a roofing square?

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof area. The calculator divides the waste-adjusted area by 100 to determine the number of roofing squares.

How many shingle bundles are needed per roofing square?

Many common asphalt shingles require approximately three bundles per roofing square, but package coverage varies. Enter the actual coverage printed on the selected shingle bundle.

Does the roofing estimate include waste?

Yes. The calculator adds the entered waste percentage to the pitch-adjusted roof area before estimating roofing squares, shingle bundles and underlayment rolls.

Can the calculator estimate more than one roof section?

Yes. The calculator can multiply the footprint by the entered number of identical roof sections. Sections with different dimensions or pitches should be calculated separately.

How are underlayment rolls calculated?

The waste-adjusted roof area is divided by the entered net coverage per underlayment roll. The result is rounded up to the next whole roll.

Does the Roofing Calculator estimate total project cost?

No. If a price per bundle is entered, the calculator estimates the cost of shingle bundles only. It does not include accessories, underlayment cost, delivery, labor or other project expenses.
