The approximate weight uses an assumed normal-weight concrete density of 2,320 kilograms per cubic meter. Actual concrete density can vary based on the mix design, aggregates, moisture and intended application.
Concrete Slab Formula
The volume of a rectangular concrete slab is calculated with this formula:
Slab volume = length × width × thickness
When several slabs have identical dimensions:
Total volume = volume of one slab × number of slabs
The selected waste allowance is then added:
Order quantity = total volume × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100)
Concrete Slab Volume in Cubic Yards
When the slab’s length and width are measured in feet and its thickness is measured in inches, convert the thickness to feet before calculating the volume:
Cubic feet = length in feet × width in feet × (thickness in inches ÷ 12)
One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet:
Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27
Concrete Slab Volume in Cubic Meters
Metric measurements are converted to meters before multiplication. Divide centimeters by 100 and millimeters by 1,000.
Cubic meters = length in meters × width in meters × thickness in meters
Concrete Slab Calculation Example
Consider a concrete slab measuring 12 feet long, 10 feet wide and 4 inches thick.
First, convert the thickness to feet:
4 ÷ 12 = 0.3333 feet
Calculate the volume in cubic feet:
12 × 10 × 0.3333 = approximately 40 cubic feet
Convert cubic feet to cubic yards:
40 ÷ 27 = approximately 1.48 cubic yards
Add a 10% waste allowance:
1.48 × 1.10 = approximately 1.63 cubic yards
The waste-adjusted estimate is approximately 1.63 cubic yards. The final order may need to be rounded according to the concrete supplier’s minimum order and delivery increments.
Waste Allowance for a Concrete Slab
A waste allowance helps cover small measurement differences, uneven subgrade, variations in slab thickness, form movement and material lost during placement. A 5–10% allowance is commonly considered for straightforward slab projects, but the appropriate percentage depends on actual site conditions.
A level, accurately measured base with secure formwork may need less additional concrete. Uneven ground, uncertain excavation depth or complicated placement conditions may require a larger allowance.
Pre-Mixed Concrete Bag Estimates
Bag estimates use approximate yields for common pre-mixed concrete bag sizes. Imperial estimates may include 40 lb, 60 lb and 80 lb bags. Metric estimates may include 20 kg, 25 kg, 30 kg and 40 kg bags.
The result is rounded up to whole bags. Concrete yield varies among products and manufacturers, so check the yield printed on the selected packaging before purchasing.
Important Slab Calculation Limitations
The calculator is intended for rectangular slabs with a consistent thickness. Slabs with different sections or thicknesses should be divided and calculated separately. Thickened edges, grade beams, steps and other additional concrete sections must be included in separate calculations when they are not part of the uniform slab thickness.
The result estimates material quantity only. It does not determine the correct slab thickness, concrete strength, reinforcement, control-joint spacing, drainage slope or sub-base design.
Actual requirements can change because of uneven ground, over-excavation, embedded items, form movement, material loss and supplier rounding policies. Confirm important material quantities and structural requirements with the concrete supplier, contractor, engineer or local building authority.
