How to Use the Brick Calculator

Step 1: Select the Unit System

Choose the measurement system used for the project:

  • Imperial / US
  • Metric

Imperial / US measurements may use feet and inches. Metric measurements may use meters, centimeters, and millimeters.

Check the unit beside every value. Entering a brick measurement in inches while millimeters are selected will produce an incorrect brick count.

Step 2: Enter the Wall Length

Enter the horizontal length of the wall in the Wall length field. Measure only the section that will contain brickwork.

For a straight wall, measure from one end of the planned brickwork to the other. If the project includes several connected walls with different lengths, calculate each wall separately or divide the project into rectangular sections.

Step 3: Enter the Wall Height

Enter the vertical height of the brickwork in the Wall height field.

Measure from the planned starting level of the brickwork to its finished height. Do not automatically include foundations, footings, parapet caps, or other components that will not be constructed from the selected brick.

If the wall has a sloping or stepped top, divide it into simpler shapes and calculate the sections separately. A rectangular calculator cannot precisely represent every irregular wall shape.

Step 4: Enter the Number of Identical Walls

Use the Number of identical walls field when several walls have exactly the same length, height, number of layers, and openings.

For example, enter:

  • 1 for one wall
  • 2 for two matching walls
  • 4 for four identical wall sections

Calculate walls with different dimensions separately. Do not use an average length or height when the difference between walls is substantial.

Step 5: Enter the Area of Doors and Windows

Openings reduce the area that must be covered with bricks. Calculate the area of each rectangular opening:

Opening area = Opening width × Opening height

Add the areas of all doors, windows, vents, access panels, and other openings. Enter the combined amount in the Total opening area field.

For example, a door measuring 3 feet wide and 7 feet high has an area of:

3 × 7 = 21 ft²

If the wall also contains a window measuring 4 feet by 3 feet, its area is:

4 × 3 = 12 ft²

The total opening area is:

21 + 12 = 33 ft²

Do not subtract an opening more than once. The total opening area must also be smaller than the gross wall area.

Step 6: Select the Number of Brick Layers

Select the number of brick layers, also called wythes, included across the wall thickness.

  • Single layer: One brick layer across the wall area
  • Double layer: Two brick layers covering the same wall area

A double-layer calculation generally requires approximately twice the face-brick quantity of a single-layer calculation before adjustments. However, actual wall construction may include bonding patterns, headers, returns, corners, piers, cavities, cut units, and other details that affect the final quantity.

Confirm the wall assembly and number of brick layers from the drawings or with the builder. The calculator does not select a suitable wall type.

Step 7: Enter the Brick Length

Enter the horizontal face length of one brick. This is the dimension visible along the wall when the brick is laid in its normal orientation.

Use the actual specified brick measurement without adding the mortar joint yourself. The calculator adds the selected joint thickness separately.

Brick names do not guarantee an exact size. Check the product specification, supplier information, or a sample brick before ordering.

Step 8: Enter the Brick Height

Enter the vertical face height of one brick. Do not enter the brick depth unless the calculator specifically requests that dimension.

For a wall-area calculation, the important face dimensions are:

Step 11: Enter the Brick Price

Enter an optional brick price if you want to estimate material cost. Use the pricing unit requested by the calculator, such as:

How to Read the Brick Calculator Results

Calculate the area of every opening separately and then add the results together.

For example, a wall contains:

Door area:

0.9 × 2.1 = 1.89 m²

Window area:

1.2 × 1 × 2 = 2.4 m²

Total opening area:
