Measurements and Information You Need
Collect the following information before using the calculator:

How to Use the Asphalt Calculator
Step 1: Select the Unit System
Choose the measurement system used for your project:
- Imperial / US
- Metric
Imperial / US measurements can use feet, inches, and yards. Asphalt weight is generally displayed in US tons and pounds.
Metric measurements can use meters, centimeters, and millimeters. Asphalt weight is generally displayed in metric tonnes and kilograms.
Check the selected unit beside every field. The numerical value alone is not enough. For example, a thickness of 2 inches is very different from a thickness of 2 feet.
Step 2: Enter the Paving Length
Enter the longest horizontal measurement of the area in the Length field. Select the unit that matches the measurement.
For a driveway, measure from the beginning of the paved surface to its endpoint. For a parking area or repair section, measure one side of the rectangular section.
Do not automatically include areas that will not receive asphalt, such as drainage channels, planting beds, utility openings, or existing pavement that will remain in place.
Step 3: Enter the Paving Width
Enter the measurement across the area in the Width field. Select the correct unit beside the value.
If the project changes width, divide it into smaller rectangular sections. Calculate each section separately instead of using a single average width when the variation is substantial.
For an irregular area, dividing the surface into measurable rectangles usually produces a more dependable estimate.
Step 4: Enter the Compacted Asphalt Thickness
Enter the planned compacted thickness of the asphalt layer. This is the finished thickness after the material has been placed and compacted.
Common thickness units include:
- Inches
- Feet
- Millimeters
- Centimeters
- Meters
Confirm whether your project specification refers to compacted thickness or loose placement thickness. The calculator uses the thickness entered as the finished volume of the asphalt layer.
Do not use the calculator to select a pavement thickness. The correct thickness can depend on traffic type, expected loads, subgrade condition, base construction, climate, drainage, asphalt mix, and local requirements.
Step 5: Enter the Number of Identical Areas
Use the Number of identical areas field when several paving sections have exactly the same length, width, and thickness.
For example, enter:
- 1 for one driveway section
- 4 for four identical parking spaces
- 10 for ten matching repair sections
Calculate areas with different dimensions separately. The quantity field should only be used when all included sections are identical.
Step 6: Check the Asphalt Density
Density describes how much a specific volume of compacted asphalt weighs. The calculator multiplies asphalt volume by density to estimate the required weight.
If the calculator provides a default density, you may use it for an early planning estimate. However, asphalt density varies according to the mixture, aggregate, binder content, compaction level, and project specification.
For a purchasing estimate, ask the asphalt supplier or paving contractor for the appropriate compacted density. Enter that value when available.
Make sure the density unit matches the selected measurement system. Imperial density may be expressed in pounds per cubic foot, while Metric density may be expressed in kilograms per cubic meter.
Step 7: Choose a Waste Allowance
Enter the additional percentage you want included in the Waste allowance field.
A waste allowance can help cover:
- Small measurement differences
- Uneven pavement edges
- Minor thickness variations
- Material left in hauling or paving equipment
- Spillage and handling losses
- Small surface irregularities
A simple rectangular area measured accurately may need a smaller allowance than an irregular surface with changing dimensions or thickness. Confirm the appropriate amount with the contractor or supplier.
Enter 0% if you want to see only the calculated geometric quantity before extra material is added.
Step 8: Enter the Asphalt Price
Enter the supplier’s asphalt price if you want to estimate material cost. Use the price per unit requested by the calculator, such as:
- Price per US ton
- Price per metric tonne
Use the material price only—not a price per square foot or square meter. Asphalt sold by weight must be calculated using a weight-based rate.
The resulting amount is an estimated material cost. It may not include:
- Base or sub-base material
- Excavation and grading
- Old pavement removal
- Transportation charges
- Equipment and labor
- Tack coat or prime coat
- Drainage work
- Compaction and finishing
- Taxes or minimum-load charges
You can leave the price field empty when you only need the asphalt quantity.
Step 9: Select Calculate Asphalt
Review the length, width, thickness, selected units, density, quantity, waste percentage, and optional price. Select Calculate Asphalt when the entries are correct.
The calculator may request a correction when:
- A required measurement is missing
- A dimension is zero or negative
- An entered value is outside the supported range
- The number of areas is not a valid whole number
- The density is missing or invalid
- The waste allowance is outside the supported range
- The optional price contains an invalid value
- The resulting volume exceeds the calculator’s supported range
Correct the highlighted field and calculate again.
How to Read the Asphalt Calculator Results
Total Paving Area
The Total paving area is calculated by multiplying length by width and then multiplying by the number of identical areas.
Imperial results may display square feet and square yards. Metric results may display square meters.
This value describes the surface coverage. It does not include thickness and cannot be used by itself to determine asphalt tonnage.
Calculated Asphalt Volume
The Calculated volume is the space occupied by the compacted asphalt layer before waste is added.
The calculator finds volume using:
Volume = Length × Width × Compacted thickness × Number of areas
Depending on the selected system, volume may be displayed in cubic feet, cubic yards, or cubic meters.
Asphalt Weight Before Waste
The asphalt weight before waste is the calculated volume multiplied by the selected density.
This is the estimated quantity required to fill the measured area at the entered compacted thickness. It does not include additional material for waste or site variations.
Waste Quantity
The Waste quantity shows how much additional asphalt was added through the selected waste percentage.
For example, if the calculated quantity is 10 tons and the waste allowance is 5%, the calculator adds 0.5 ton.
Suggested Asphalt Order
The Suggested asphalt order is the calculated asphalt weight after the waste allowance is included.
This is the main result to discuss with your asphalt supplier. The actual order may need to be adjusted for supplier minimums, truck capacity, available order increments, mix design, and contractor recommendations.
Do not assume that every supplier accepts an order with the exact decimal quantity displayed by the calculator.
Weight Conversions
The calculator may show the estimated asphalt quantity in several weight units, including:
- US short tons
- Metric tonnes
- Pounds
- Kilograms
Check whether your supplier uses US tons or metric tonnes. They are different units:
- One US short ton equals 2,000 pounds
- One metric tonne equals 1,000 kilograms
Use the unit requested by the supplier when obtaining a quotation or placing an order.
Estimated Material Cost
The estimated material cost is calculated by multiplying the waste-adjusted asphalt quantity by the entered price per ton or tonne.
Material cost = Suggested asphalt order × Price per weight unit
This result is not a complete paving quotation unless every required service and charge is included in the entered rate.

The calculation breakdown summarizes the entered dimensions, unit conversions, paving area, compacted volume, density, waste allowance, required weight, and optional material cost.
Review this section before using the result. It can help identify an incorrect thickness unit, density, quantity, or project measurement.
Asphalt Calculator Formula
The calculator uses the following process.
First, it calculates the surface area:
Area = Length × Width × Number of identical areas
It then calculates compacted asphalt volume:
Volume = Area × Compacted thickness
The volume is converted into weight using asphalt density:
Asphalt weight = Volume × Density
The selected waste allowance is then added:
Suggested order = Asphalt weight × (1 + Waste percentage ÷ 100)
If a price is entered, material cost is calculated as:
Material cost = Suggested order × Asphalt price per ton or tonne
All measurements must be converted into compatible units before multiplication.
Imperial / US Asphalt Calculation Example
Suppose a rectangular driveway measures 50 feet long and 20 feet wide. The compacted asphalt thickness is 3 inches.
- Length: 50 ft
- Width: 20 ft
- Compacted thickness: 3 in
- Number of areas: 1
- Density: 145 lb/ft³
- Waste allowance: 5%
Calculate the surface area:
50 × 20 = 1,000 ft²
Convert the thickness to feet:
3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
Calculate the asphalt volume:
1,000 × 0.25 = 250 ft³
Calculate the asphalt weight:
250 × 145 = 36,250 lb
Convert pounds to US tons:
36,250 ÷ 2,000 = 18.125 tons
Add 5% waste:
18.125 × 1.05 = approximately 19.03 tons
The estimated waste-adjusted quantity is approximately 19.03 US tons. Confirm the density, thickness, and final order with the asphalt supplier or paving contractor.
Metric Asphalt Calculation Example
Suppose a parking area measures 20 meters long and 10 meters wide. The compacted asphalt thickness is 75 millimeters.
- Length: 20 m
- Width: 10 m
- Compacted thickness: 75 mm
- Number of areas: 1
- Density: 2,320 kg/m³
- Waste allowance: 5%
Calculate the surface area:
20 × 10 = 200 m²
Convert the thickness to meters:
75 ÷ 1,000 = 0.075 m
Calculate the asphalt volume:
200 × 0.075 = 15 m³
Calculate the asphalt weight:
15 × 2,320 = 34,800 kg
Convert kilograms to metric tonnes:
34,800 ÷ 1,000 = 34.8 tonnes
Add 5% waste:
34.8 × 1.05 = 36.54 tonnes
The estimated waste-adjusted quantity is 36.54 metric tonnes. Use the actual mix density and ordering requirements supplied for the project.
How to Calculate an Irregular Asphalt Area
Many driveways and parking areas are not perfect rectangles. Divide an irregular surface into smaller shapes that can be measured reliably.
For example:
- Divide the project into rectangular sections.
- Measure the length and width of each section.
- Calculate each section separately.
- Use the correct thickness for each section.
- Add the suggested asphalt quantities together.
Do not use the identical-area quantity field for sections with different measurements.
If the project contains curved edges, measure carefully and ask the contractor whether an additional allowance is appropriate.
Compacted Thickness vs. Loose Asphalt Thickness
Asphalt becomes denser and thinner when compacted. Loose material placed by paving equipment may therefore be thicker than the completed pavement.
The calculator estimates material from the compacted thickness entered by the user. Do not enter a loose placement thickness unless the calculator or project specification specifically requests it.
Ask the paving contractor to confirm the required compacted thickness and the planned number of asphalt layers.
How to Download, Print, or Share the Result
After completing a successful calculation, use Share Result, Download PDF, or Print Results when available.
If you change any input after calculating, calculate again before downloading or printing. This ensures that the saved report contains the latest measurements and results.
Common Asphalt Calculator Mistakes
- Using the wrong thickness unit: Check whether the value is entered in inches, feet, millimeters, centimeters, or meters.
- Entering loose thickness: Use the planned compacted thickness unless instructed otherwise.
- Ignoring density: Asphalt weight depends on the mix density used in the calculation.
- Confusing tons and tonnes: Confirm which weight unit the supplier uses.
- Measuring only the surface area: Tonnage also depends on asphalt thickness and density.
- Using one rectangle for an irregular project: Divide the surface into smaller measurable sections.

- Using price per square foot as price per ton: Enter a weight-based material price.

- Letting the calculator select pavement thickness: Thickness must come from the project design or a qualified contractor.
