Paint Formula

Paint = paintable area × number of coats ÷ coverage per gallon. The selected waste allowance is then added.

Coverage Note

Many wall paints cover about 350 to 400 square feet per gallon for one coat, but porous or textured surfaces may use more paint.

Important: Coverage depends on the paint, surface porosity, texture, color change and application method. Confirm the rated coverage on the product label.

Room Paint Calculator

The Paint Calculator estimates how much paint is required for the walls and optional ceiling of one or more identical rectangular rooms. It calculates the wall area from the room length, width and height, then deducts standard doors and windows.

The calculator supports Imperial/US and metric measurements. It also accounts for the number of coats, paint coverage and waste allowance. Results include the required paint in gallons and liters, the total coated area and a suggested combination of one-gallon cans and five-gallon pails.

Paint Calculator Results

The main result is the estimated paint volume after the selected waste allowance has been added. Imperial calculations display the primary result in gallons, while metric calculations display liters.

The complete results include:

  • Gross wall area based on the room perimeter and height
  • Area deducted for standard doors and windows
  • Paintable wall area after deductions
  • Optional ceiling area
  • Total coated area for all selected surfaces and coats
  • Paint required before waste
  • Additional paint included for waste
  • Total paint in gallons and liters
  • Whole gallons to purchase
  • Suggested one-gallon cans and five-gallon pails

The calculated paint volume may contain a decimal, but the whole-gallon result is rounded up. The container suggestion uses US one-gallon cans and five-gallon pails. Paint packaging differs by country and manufacturer, so metric users should compare the liter result with locally available container sizes.

Paint Calculation Formula

The calculator first determines the gross wall area from the room perimeter:

Room perimeter = 2 × (room length + room width)

Gross wall area = room perimeter × wall height × number of identical rooms

The calculator deducts the area assigned to the entered doors and windows:

Paintable wall area = gross wall area − door and window area

If the ceiling option is selected, the ceiling area is added:

Ceiling area = room length × room width × number of identical rooms

The combined paintable surface is multiplied by the number of coats:

Total coated area = (paintable wall area + ceiling area) × number of coats

Paint required before waste is calculated from the entered product coverage:

Paint before waste = total coated area ÷ coverage per gallon

The final paint quantity includes the selected waste allowance:

Total paint = paint before waste × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100)

Paint Calculation Example

Consider one rectangular room measuring 12 feet long, 10 feet wide and 8 feet high. The room has one standard door and two standard windows. The ceiling is not included.

First, calculate the gross wall area:

2 × (12 + 10) × 8 = 352 square feet

The calculator assigns 21 square feet to each standard door and 15 square feet to each standard window:

Door and window area = 21 + (2 × 15) = 51 square feet

Deduct the openings from the gross wall area:

352 − 51 = 301 square feet

For two coats, the total coated area is:

301 × 2 = 602 square feet

Using paint coverage of 375 square feet per gallon:

602 ÷ 375 = approximately 1.61 gallons

Add a 10% waste allowance:

1.61 × 1.10 = approximately 1.77 gallons

The estimated requirement is approximately 1.77 gallons, or 6.68 liters. Because paint must be purchased in available containers, the whole-gallon estimate is 2 one-gallon cans.

Paint Coverage per Gallon

The calculator uses a default coverage of 375 square feet per gallon for one coat. This falls within the commonly stated range of approximately 350 to 400 square feet per gallon for many wall paints.

Coverage is not the same for every product or surface. Rough, textured or porous materials may absorb more paint. A major color change, application method and the condition of the existing coating can also affect the quantity required.

Use the coverage printed on the selected paint label or technical data sheet. Metric mode converts the coverage to square meters per liter, and the entered value can still be adjusted.

Doors, Windows and Ceiling Area

Each standard door entered in the calculator deducts 21 square feet, or approximately 1.95 square meters. Each standard window deducts 15 square feet, or approximately 1.39 square meters.

These are fixed planning allowances rather than measurements of the actual openings. Large windows, double doors, sliding doors and unusually sized openings can make the estimate less precise.

The ceiling is excluded by default. When it is included, the calculator adds the room length multiplied by the room width for every identical room. The same number of coats, coverage value and waste allowance are applied to both walls and ceilings.

Number of Paint Coats

The number of coats directly affects the estimated paint quantity. Applying two coats creates twice as much coated area as applying one coat.

The required number of coats depends on the paint, surface condition, existing color, new color, primer use and expected finish. A strong color change or uneven surface may need additional coverage even when a product is promoted as having good hiding ability.

Primer is not calculated separately by this tool. If primer is required, estimate it separately using the coverage and number of coats stated on the primer label.

Paint Waste Allowance

The waste allowance adds paint for minor measurement differences, material left in containers, roller and brush loading, spills, touch-ups and normal application losses. The calculator uses a default allowance of 10%, which can be adjusted from 0% to 50%.

The appropriate allowance depends on measurement accuracy, surface texture, application method and project conditions. Waste should not be used to correct incorrect room dimensions or an unsuitable coverage value.

Important Paint Estimate Limitations

This calculator is designed for rectangular rooms with a consistent wall height. Rooms with sloped walls, vaulted ceilings, alcoves, columns or irregular layouts should be divided into measurable sections where possible.

Door and window deductions use fixed standard areas. The calculator does not accept the individual dimensions of each opening. It also does not separately calculate trim, baseboards, doors, cabinets, accent walls, primer or paint cost.

The suggested container mix uses one-gallon cans and five-gallon pails. It does not account for quarts, partial containers or country-specific packaging. A store may also mix colors differently across container sizes.

Actual paint use can vary because of surface porosity, texture, application equipment, painter technique, color change, product formulation and material left in tools or containers. Confirm product coverage, recommended coats and available container sizes before purchasing paint.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Paint Calculator estimate?

The calculator estimates paintable wall area, optional ceiling area, total coated area, paint before waste, additional waste paint and total paint in gallons and liters.

How is paintable wall area calculated?

The calculator multiplies the room perimeter by the wall height and number of identical rooms. It then deducts the assigned area for the entered standard doors and windows.

How much area does one gallon of paint cover?

Many wall paints cover approximately 350 to 400 square feet per gallon for one coat. The calculator uses 375 square feet per gallon by default, but the value should be changed to match the selected paint label.

Does the Paint Calculator subtract doors and windows?

Yes. Each standard door deducts 21 square feet and each standard window deducts 15 square feet. These fixed allowances may not match unusually large or small openings.

Can the calculator include ceiling paint?

Yes. Select the ceiling option to add the room length multiplied by its width. The selected number of coats, coverage and waste allowance will also apply to the ceiling.

Does the paint estimate include multiple coats?

Yes. The paintable surface area is multiplied by the entered number of coats before the required paint volume is calculated.

Does the calculator support metric measurements?

Yes. Metric inputs support meters and centimeters, with paint coverage entered in square meters per liter. Results include square meters and liters.

Does the Paint Calculator estimate paint cost?

No. The calculator estimates paint quantity and a suggested mix of one-gallon cans and five-gallon pails. It does not include paint prices, primer, supplies, labor or other project costs.

Can I save or print the paint calculation?

Yes. After calculating, the results can be downloaded as a PDF or opened as a separate print-ready report.
